New Year's Resolutions

Resolutions Update: Final Results

I postponed this post for as long as I could because I realized an error last time.  Last year, I made 16 posts (yes, I know… that’s not a lot).

I had a bunch of ideas on what to write, my heart and soul was ready to be bled out over the webpages.  Unfortunately, law school got in the way.  So, without further ado… the end result of my 2015 New Year’s Resolutions.

1. Work out regularly
I didn’t even try to do this.  It’ll be on the roster for next year.

2. Go to law school

3. Redo my bedroom
Well, I did reorganize my bedroom at my apartment… but that was not the bedroom I was thinking when I made this resolution.

4. Start vlogging
I didn’t even try to do this.  Because of the realities of law school, this will not be on the one next year. It’s hard enough to blog.

5. Write on the blog more
Three. Posts. Short.

6. Be more up-to-date on current world and domestic events
Done.  You can’t be in law school without knowing what’s going on in the world (or in other people’s business).

7. Read at least 4 books this year
… DANG IT. I did read two books this year (Secret Life of Bees and the law school essays book); however… I didn’t read the other two. But I read about 96 cases for property, 56 cases for contracts, and 52 for civil procedure. That’s about 220 cases, which, times about 3 pages, is 660 pages (and for the most part these cases were not 3 pages). The other two books comes to the total pages of 528 pages. Therefore… I read the equivalent of two books and then some.

But I’ll stay true to the resolution and not mark it off.

8. Be nicer to people
You may be surprised to know that I have successfully completed this resolution.  It was in a little way, but it made a big difference.  I noticed a while ago that when I smile at people in passing… I don’t actually smile.  I press my lips together and then call it one, but it’s not.  Since I’ve realized it, I’ve made an effort to smile, with teeth or at least an upturn of the lips.  It was awkward for weeks, but I managed.

9. Learn an instrument
Ugh. No. But I really have to because of the wedding in six months.

10. Photography
I love me some photography. I managed more this year, just not with my fancy camera. My instagram has some pretty awesome pictures, if I do say so myself.

11. Get U.S. Citizenship

So, I didn’t complete all of my resolutions, but 5/11 ain’t so bad!  I’m proud of what I did get done. Some of them are biggies, like going to law school and getting my citizenship.  This has been a good year, despite all the difficulties.  I think this resolutions list is a testament to that.  Also, I don’t think I’ve ever completed this many in all the years I’ve done resolutions (it helped to have them written and to check myself every couple of months).

The next set will be coming out soon.  I still have to figure it out myself.  I think I’ll probably have a shorter list that will be much harder to complete.  Stepping it up in 2016.

Thank you and stay tuned!

New Year's Resolutions

Resolutions Update: 3rd Quarter

Happy day to all!

It is time for yet another New Year’s Resolutions update!  Who’s excited?!  ME!!  I love doing these.  Partially because it’s an easy post, but also because I get to think of all the things I’ve done.  I’m even more excited about this post because I actually get to cross things off today!  Let’s just drive right in and get to the crossing out part!

1. Work out regularly
… Now that I am back on campus and live two blocks away from the gym, I should really be much better at this.  However, I am much more active!  I walk over a mile every day to the law school.  I also live on the second floor and the stairway is kind of steep so… some points?

2. Go to law school
I’M IN LAW SCHOOL AND I WENT AND I’M IN IT.

3. Redo my bedroom
I rearranged my bedroom earlier this year.  I changed it back, but it did change… I know the goal is to paint it, but now I’m in Champaign and it’s a little harder to do.

4. Start vlogging
I posted a video to my Ghee Funk page!  I did it a few weeks ago, but it was done!  As far as my personal vlogging goal, it’s still a work in progress.  Any tips from people that do have vlogs?  I don’t even know how to get started…

5. Write on the blog more
I’m calling it. Really.  This year, I have written on this blog more than the year before (and probably the year before that).  I have completed this task.

6. Be more up-to-date on current world and domestic events
I apparently still can’t do this.

7. Read at least 4 books this year
I’m still working through “Lipstick Jihad.”  It’s much harder now that I have so much reading to do here.

8. Be nicer to people
This one is so hard.  I get so grumpy sometimes…

9. Learn an instrument
I will be playing guitar at my friend’s wedding next year, so I should really get on task for this.

10. Photography
Yes, that requires time.

11. Get U.S. Citizenship
On June 16, I became a U.S. Citizen.  I changed my name.  As of last week, I officially finished all the steps involved in finalizing that name change.  I’m also a registered voter, yay!  I’m coming for you 2016 Presidential Elections!!!!

Three out of eleven isn’t so bad.  Usually I can’t complete any of my resolutions.  I’m really trying to stay true to these resolutions.  They’re all things I really want to do, but never complete.  It’s mostly due to laziness and being grumpy.  Those are two things that I really want to strike out of my life!

Hopefully the next (and final) check-in will have some major changes.

Thanks for reading!

New Year's Resolutions

Resolutions Update: 2nd Quarter

Hey!

I am back again after a long… long hiatus. I wish I could say it was planned; however, I have a hard time finding inspiration to write. But this one is easy! This is a check in, half of it is already written for me 🙂

So, in March I made a post that checked in on the status of my New Years Resolutions. They were progressing decently well for it just being March. However, now that we’re half way through the year and life has caught up/has started speeding up… they’re not doing so great. However, I am not giving up! It’s going to happen!

Onward.

1. Work out regularly
I hate exercise. I hate it, I hate it, and I hate that I need it. I haven’t gone to the gym since January. The most I’ve worked out today is holding back my Lana dog while standing in line to get her vaccinations. I’m not sure that counts. However, I keep the hope alive. I think about doing it every day and I’m trying to adjust my shower schedule to it… I’m working on it.

2. Go to law school
I have not gone yet. But… I will. I was officially accepted into the University of Illinois College of Law. I start school in August. It was a hard decision to make but I have no regrets so far.

3. Redo my bedroom
I have paint samples, at least. It’s gonna happen. It’s futile, but it’s gonna happen.

4. Start vlogging
I should do this. I forgot this was a New Years resolution. It’d be an advice channel, for those interested.

5. Write on the blog more
I’m still writing more than I did last year, so… I’m going to call this a success, #winning

6. Be more up-to-date on current world and domestic events
I apparently can’t do this.

7. Read at least 4 books this year
I read a book! And not just my law school essays book, but a real book! I read “The Secret Life of Bees” because it’s a classic and I like bees. It was an okay book. I expected something different. I’d placed the book in the wrong era… so it wasn’t what I expected. It was okay. Now I am working through “Lipstick Jihad” which, word of advice to the general population, is not the best book to read while waiting for your immigration interview.

8. Be nicer to people
I’m still working on this, but I know I was nicer to someone a few times. So… you know. Also #winning.

9. Learn an instrument
My mom said she’d teach me yesterday at 3:00… then she had a rehearsal with someone else at the same time. It’s going well.

10. Photography
I made a deal with myself when I first started applying to law schools. I’ve been wanting a DSLR for years. I said that if I got into law school, I would get my camera. Then I got into law school. I almost didn’t get the camera, but my mom convinced me that I should. It is another purchase that I do not regret.

11. Get U.S. Citizenship
So, the last step to getting citizenship is to be sworn in… I have my swearing in ceremony on June 16.

Many of these resolutions aren’t completed, but a few of them are making progress, if not already done. It feels good.

I hope everyone else’s resolutions are also going well! Even if they’re not, you still have the other half of the year and it’s summer. There’s always time to do some soul searching and improve yourself in the summer. The weather is nice, there’s outdoor activities, and there’s sun! So much time still remains to do what you want to do with yourself.

New Year's Resolutions

Resolutions Update: 1st Quarter

So, I made a big hubaboo about my resolutions this year. I put a lot of thought into them. I kept them reasonable and, compared to my usual list, kept them short. It is now a quarter of the way through the year and I thought that I’d check in on them and see how the progress is going.

SPOILER ALERT: It is not going all that great.

1. Work out regularly
I have been to the gym once since I’ve made this resolution. It was in January. I went to yoga, which kicked my butt. Although, my mom and I have been debating canceling our membership because we just don’t go. Ever. When it gets warm, I prefer to run outside with the puppies, she prefers to walk the puppies–and the puppies enjoy it too! She’s always too busy and I’m always that lazy. So that’s all up in the air. Now that’s it’s starting to warm up, I will pick up running again and I am planning on getting a bike (since both of my jobs are a mile away from my house…).

2. Go to law school
This is still a work in progress, but I’m farther along than I was last year, which is the year I didn’t go to law school.

3. Redo my bedroom
This is a summer project. I’ve painted in a room when the windows wouldn’t open. I will never go back there.

4. Start vlogging
I am still planning on this! The problem is that I’m swamped with work and law school apps. Also, I’m afraid of law school admissions sneaks sneak sneaking onto the YouTube channels with my face on it.

5. Write on the blog more
I did this!!!! I’m doing it right now! This is the second consecutive week that I’ve written on this blog. I’m proud of myself. I did this one!

6. Be more up-to-date on current world and domestic events
I tried this. It made me sad. That whole boko haram thing and the ISIS and the everything… This is half done. I have to get reacquainted with the cruel reality of the world again before going back to steadily reading it.

7. Read at least 4 books this year
I’m working through one right now. It’s about law school essays, but it’s a book!

8. Be nicer to people
CONTINUES TO BE THE CONSTANT STRUGGLE. I think I’ve successfully been gentling my tone, which is a huge improvement for anyone that’s ever held a conversation with me. I’m still trying. I’ve gentled my tone, but I was also playing Risk with a group of people and completely cussed out a friend that kept trying to take South America away from me. It was bad… like… lots of f-bombs. So, you get some, you lose some.

9. Learn an instrument
I have inquired into this. My mom said she won’t teach me until I grow out my nails. It’s proving to be an extremely hard task right now with the stress.

10. Photography
I am still trying to figure out what to do with this. All I’ve done so far is shop around for DSLRs… priorities.

11. Get U.S. Citizenship
Still a work in progress, but I am two steps ahead of where I was when I wrote out my resolutions!

Overall… there’s still room for progress. I’m very happy that I’ve successfully moved foward in any of these resolutions. Many people make resolutions and never go back to them. I wanted to make these resolutions and complete them!

I hope everyone else’s resolutions are also going well! Even if they’re not, you still have the rest of the year. It’s only March! So much time remains to do what you want to do with yourself.

Everyday Life · New Year's Resolutions

New Year, New Start!

I don’t know about everyone else, but last year was certifiably one of the worst years I have ever experienced. There were many deaths in the family, my community, people that I’ve known since I was little… and so much heartache in every other aspect. I’ve been waiting for 2015, my fresh start.

Many people do not do New Years resolutions. I am probably the only one in my office that does resolutions–everyone else says that they never actually follow through on the resolutions, so why bother? However, I am all over that business. I need my resolutions.

See, it’s easy to lose sight of what’s important to you, especially as the year picks up, everyone gets out of the holiday mood, and the dark side of reality starts to overwhelm you. Those resolutions are a snapshot of what you know you are capable of doing from the most optimistic time of year (at least for me).

I can only speak for myself, but no day fills me with more hope and courage and determination (a rare feeling for me) than the night of New Year’s Day. On that night, I lay in bed and think of everything that lies ahead of me and how I can do everything I put my mind to… but I have to keep the faith and focus. I make my list and I commit that list to memory. The rest of the year goes towards doing as much as I can off that list. Last year didn’t go so well, but so what???? That officially doesn’t matter anymore. It’s officially 2015. It is the year that I am going to law school. It’s the year that I redo my bedroom. It’s the year that I set out what I need to do. This year 2015 is what I make it from this point forward.

And that is why I make New Years Resolutions.

With that in mind, I would like to post my New Years Resolutions. I have it posted on my wall so that I have a daily reminder and I am saying/posting them on every platform I use to communicate so that I never forget what I’m working towards, so that I don’t forget the big picture.

~Marcie’s New Years Resolutions~

1. Work out regularly
I feel as though this doesn’t need an explanation…

2. Go to law school
This is the year I achieve the dream.

3. Redo my bedroom
Because Playful Pool and yellow walls are not adult

4. Start vlogging
Many of you may or may not know that I have a YouTube channel with my friend.
We have been posting videos back and forth through our long-distance friendship.
Since its inception, I find myself wanting more and more to do videos of my own.
I just need to find out what I could video blog about…

5. Write on the blog more
Because I only write 5 posts last year and most of them were whiny.
Also, writing is a tool that should be utilized constantly.

6. Be more up-to-date on current world and domestic events
I feel as though a political science major should know more about the world than the average person.

7. Read at least 4 books this year
Last year I bought four books.
I didn’t read a single one of them and I had many excuses.
This year, no excuses. I need to read for my own betterment.

8. Be nicer to people
THE CONSTANT STRUGGLE

9. Learn an instrument
Either the bass or the guitar, but it has to happen.

10. Photography
This is more open ended, mostly because I want to explore what I would want to do
with it in the first place. I love photography, especially film photography, but I never
had much of a chance to play around with it. This year I want to do more with my camera
and develop photography skills.

11. Get U.S. Citizenship
My application is completed. My passport pictures are taken.
I have taken copies of my green card. I just need to find the $ 680.00 to do it.

I know that this list feels underwhelming–much of it is making myself actually do certain things. But I think that’s been my problem for the last 25 years. I am constantly reevaluating myself and how I approach people, problems, and different situations. However, very rarely do I do anything about it. I have a problem making myself actually do what I want to do. So yes, much of my list is doing things, but if I can do half the things on this list, I’ll have so much to be proud of. It would be the year I finally got off my ass and put effort into the things I want, rather than passively try and fail to get what I want.

So happy new year to everyone! I wish everyone the best of luck and hope you, too, can keep the faith. With or without resolutions.

Everyday Life · New Year's Resolutions

New Years Resolutions

I’ve been online MIA for a long time now. I took my LSAT and then I spent most of my time in my basement catching up on my tv shows… because I’m an unemployed slacker. Now, I am back on the web (or at least to reality) and taking stock of my situations and environment. So just for giggles, I’m going to post my 2014 Resolutions list and hope that I can reach at least one of the goals.

1. Obey the commands of my doctor (because I’m too young to have diabetes… boo).

2. Eat more vegetables, because they’re good for people and I need a little more green in my life.

3. Stop being so prickly upon meeting new people. Apparently that can be off-putting.

4. Go to law school. This might be a cop-out, but at least I’ll reach one of my goals 🙂

5. Be nicer to my friends because I can be prickly to them too.

6. Be less messy. Every two weeks I look around my room and I can’t tell the difference between my clean clothes and my dirty clothes and I can’t see my floors. It’s not just my room either, but my lair (the basement) which will also have my clothes and blankets strewn about. My mother still says that she knows I’ve been in a room because it looks like a tornado has run through it. It’s amazing how one person can create that much mess.

7. I read three books in 2013. I would like to read four books cover to cover in 2014. Don’t make fun of my small number goals. I have a short attention span.

8. Get my ears pierced.

9. Clear out my closet as much as possible because hoarding clothing is no bueno.

10. Quisas tomar un clase de espanol…? O uma de portugues?

Getting a job isn’t there… because I don’t want to go back to work ever. Unfortunately, I have to get a job to pay for things like the student loans that are no longer going to be deferred. Oh, post-grad life.

What about everyone else’s New Year’s Resolutions?
